Is It Unlimited, or "30GB+ ?"

Calyx's website recently was touting that their service was "unlimited" - but due to the mainstream press attention Calyx has clarified "For legal reasons, we can't call it unlimited data service, but..... We are supposed to refer to it as 30 GB+..

When you pass the 30GB mark during the month, the Internet service does not slow down (throttle), or cut you off, and there are NO overage charges."

My next door neighbor has their service and he loves it.  As an engineer, he needs to constantly update the files on his server in Dallas Texas, and every time he updates a file in deep east Texas at his home he has to have it sync up in Dallas at the same time.  No other service was making the grade for him.  He added a WeBoost signal booster for cell phones due to weak signal, and now it and gets 39Mb down and 15Mb up.

Calyx is the name of the Internet Service Provider which is structured as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, meaning that they can accept donations and provide tax-receipts for them. Yes you read right!  It's a tax-deductible charitable donation when you sign up as a member. Donations start at $500 to $1,000 per year. Subsequent years are $400 (because you don't get another wifi gadget, just the service).

Calyx is a nonprofit organization!

In 2013, Sprint acquired a competitor called Clearwire in order to gain control of the company's wireless spectrum in order to launch Sprint's LTE/4G business. Now, that spectrum was originally allocated for educational purposes before being sublicensed to Clear, and it came with the requirement that non-profits get unlimited access at very low prices.  And guess what? Calyx, is a nonprofit.

So when you sign up, Calyx uses the wireless data service as a membership premium to help pay for their crypto and privacy supporting activities: to pay for multiple gigabit connections, data center space, etc.. to offer a whole array of free security and privacy services to the public including our LEAP based VPN, their encrypted instant messaging service, and their many Tor exit nodes.

The upshot? For $500, Calyx will send you a little wifi hotspot with a Sprint SIM in it that comes with a year's worth unlimited, anonymous, unshaped, unfiltered 4G/LTE bandwidth on Sprint's network. Unlimited as in, you can download 360GB a month and not break a sweat.

As for myself, just as soon as my AT&T contract runs out, I am getting a Calyx Subscription with Internet box, and since I live out in the country side, I will get a WeBoost cell phone signal booster and antenna to break out of my 5 Mbs download speed!
